But not all above-ground pools are created equal, and making the right choice takes a little research upfront.

Above-Ground Pool Types: Frame Pools vs. Resin Pools
The two main categories of above-ground pools you’ll encounter are steel-frame pools and resin (or hybrid) pools.
Steel-frame pools are generally the more affordable option. They’re sturdy and widely available, but the metal components can be susceptible to rust and corrosion over time — especially given Georgia’s humidity and the chemical environment of pool water. Galvanized steel helps, but expect to invest in rust-prevention maintenance over the years.
Resin pools use non-corrosive polymer components that won’t rust, fade, or become brittle over time. They hold up exceptionally well in Georgia’s heat, where prolonged sun exposure can degrade lower-quality materials quickly. While resin pools typically cost more upfront, they tend to last significantly longer and require less maintenance.
Hybrid pools combine resin top rails and uprights with a steel bottom track, offering a middle-ground option between cost and durability.
Choosing the Right Shape and Size
Above-ground pools come in round, oval, and rectangular configurations. Round pools are the most structurally sound and least expensive option — the circular shape distributes water pressure evenly, which means simpler framing requirements. Oval pools give more swim space but require more complex support structures, which adds to the cost and installation complexity.
For families in Middle Georgia, we typically recommend at least a 24-foot round or 15×30 oval pool to provide adequate swim space for kids and adults alike. If space allows, going larger is almost always worth it — you’ll appreciate the extra room during the family gatherings that inevitably happen around a backyard pool.
Consider your yard’s dimensions and terrain carefully. Above-ground pools require a level surface — even a slope of just a few inches across the pool’s diameter can create significant structural stress. If your yard isn’t naturally level, plan for site prep, which may involve some grading or leveling work before installation.
Walls, Liners, and Decking
The pool wall thickness and the liner quality are two areas where cutting corners leads to regret. Look for pool walls of at least 52–54 inches in height — this provides more swim depth and a better overall experience than shorter-walled models.
Pool liners for above-ground pools come in overlapping, beaded, and J-hook (also called unibead) styles. Liner thickness is measured in mils; a 20-mil or thicker liner will resist punctures and UV degradation much better than a thin 15-mil liner. In Georgia’s intense sun, liner longevity is a real consideration.
Adding a deck or patio surround to your above-ground pool dramatically improves its usability and curb appeal. Even a simple deck with stairs makes getting in and out much easier and transforms the look of the installation from a utilitarian fixture to an attractive backyard feature.
Equipment: Pump, Filter, and Sanitization
Most above-ground pool packages include a basic pump and filter system, but the included equipment is often undersized or lower quality than what you’ll want for the long term. In Middle Georgia’s summer heat, pool water warms quickly, which accelerates bacterial growth and chemical consumption. A properly sized pump and filter running on an appropriate cycle schedule keeps water clear and healthy.
Salt chlorine generators have become increasingly popular for above-ground pools because they reduce the need to constantly purchase and handle chlorine. The salt system generates chlorine automatically from dissolved salt, maintaining more consistent sanitizer levels with less hands-on effort.
Installation and Permits
While above-ground pool installation is something many homeowners tackle as a DIY project, professional installation ensures the pool is level, the liner is properly fitted, and the equipment is correctly connected and sized. Poor installation is the leading cause of premature above-ground pool failure.
Check with your local municipality regarding permit requirements. Warner Robins and Houston County may have requirements related to fencing, setbacks, and electrical connections that apply to above-ground pools as well as in-ground ones.
