Your pool has given you years of summer memories, but lately, it’s starting to show its age. If you’ve noticed rough patches on the walls, persistent staining, or a surface that no longer holds its color, it may be time to think about pool resurfacing. It’s one of the most impactful investments you can make in an existing pool, and for homeowners in Middle Georgia, timing and material choices matter more than most people realize.

What Is Pool Resurfacing?

Resurfacing is the process of removing the existing interior finish from your pool shell and applying a fresh new layer. Depending on the material you choose, a proper resurface can last anywhere from 10 to 25 years, restoring the pool’s appearance, improving water chemistry stability, and making the surface smooth and comfortable underfoot again.

It’s different from a simple cleaning or stain treatment. Resurfacing addresses the actual condition of the pool shell, not just the surface-level buildup on top of it.

Signs Your Pool Is Ready for Resurfacing

How do you know when it’s truly time? Here are the most common indicators we see on pools throughout the Warner Robins and Middle Georgia area:

Rough or Pitted Texture: If the walls and floor feel like sandpaper or have developed small pits and divots, the plaster is breaking down. This rough texture is hard on swimmers’ feet and hands, and it makes algae much harder to brush off.

Persistent Staining: Some discoloration can be treated with chemical treatments or acid washing. But if staining has penetrated into the plaster itself, no amount of scrubbing or shocking will fully remove it. That’s a sign the surface integrity is compromised.

Chalking or Flaking: When white, dusty material appears in the water or you can rub off material with your hand, the plaster is deteriorating. Left unaddressed, this can contribute to water chemistry imbalances and damage pool equipment.

Cracks in the Surface: Fine surface cracks (as opposed to structural cracks in the shell itself) are a normal sign of age. They allow water to seep behind the finish, accelerating the breakdown and eventually leading to bigger problems.

Fading or Uneven Color: Even if the surface is structurally sound, significant color fading makes a pool look tired and neglected. Resurfacing is your chance to refresh the look and even update the color to something more modern.

Resurfacing Material Options

One of the most important decisions you’ll make is what material to use for the new surface. Each option has its own look, feel, cost, and durability profile.

Standard White Plaster is the most affordable option and has been used in pools for decades. It creates a bright, clean look but is the least durable choice, typically lasting 7–12 years in Georgia’s climate. It’s a solid choice for budget-conscious projects but will likely need attention sooner than premium alternatives.

Quartz Aggregate Plaster blends crushed quartz with white cement to create a harder, more durable surface than standard plaster. It resists staining and chemical erosion better, holds color more consistently, and typically lasts 12–18 years. This is one of the most popular options for homeowners who want a significant upgrade without the highest-tier price point.

Pebble and Aggregate Finishes use small river pebbles, glass beads, or polished stones mixed into the plaster to create a textured, natural look. Brands like PebbleTec and similar products are known for their exceptional durability, often lasting 20 years or more — and the wide range of color and texture options they offer. They do feel slightly more textured underfoot than smoother finishes, but many homeowners love the organic, lagoon-like look.

Glass Bead Finishes create a shimmering, reflective effect that’s particularly striking in sunlight. They’re smooth, durable, and visually dramatic. If you’re looking to give your pool a high-end resort feel, glass bead finishes are worth exploring.

What the Resurfacing Process Looks Like

Understanding the process helps set realistic expectations about timeline and disruption.

First, your pool will be drained completely. The existing surface is then chipped or ground away, and any structural issues with the shell are addressed before the new material goes on. The new finish is applied by hand and must cure properly before the pool is refilled, a process that requires careful attention to avoid staining or cracking during the early curing stage.

Once refilled, the startup chemistry process is critical. New plaster especially requires specific brushing and chemical adjustment during the first few weeks to ensure a smooth, even finish and prevent premature etching or discoloration.

From start to finish, most residential pool resurfacing projects take one to two weeks, depending on shell size, prep work needed, and weather conditions. Middle Georgia’s warm months are ideal for resurfacing because the temperatures support proper curing.

Is It Time to Update the Tile or Coping Too?

Since you’re already draining and doing significant work on the pool, many homeowners take the opportunity to update the waterline tile or coping at the same time. Tile at the waterline not only adds visual interest but serves a practical purpose, protecting the top edge of the plaster from the fluctuating water line where chemical exposure is highest. Updating it during a resurface project saves labor costs compared to doing it as a separate job later.
