Your Complete Guide to Opening Your Pool This Spring

March is here, and that means pool season is just around the corner! Opening your pool the right way sets the tone for the entire summer. Skip a step now and you could be dealing with green water, scaling, or equipment headaches come June. We’re here to make sure that doesn’t happen.

Step 1: Remove and Clean Your Winter Cover

Start by carefully removing your winter cover. Use a cover pump to remove standing water first, then fold and clean the cover before storing it properly. A well-maintained cover will last for years — a neglected one won’t make it to next winter.

Step 2: Inspect and Reconnect Your Equipment

Before firing up your pump and filter, take the time to inspect everything carefully. Check for cracks in your pump housing, worn O-rings and gaskets, any signs of freeze damage in your plumbing lines, and make sure your filter media is clean and ready. Lubricate all O-rings with a silicone-based lubricant. This one step can save you from a costly mid-summer breakdown.

Step 3: Get a Free Professional Water Test

Before you add a single chemical, bring a water sample into Mid State Pools for our free professional water analysis. We test for pH, total alkalinity, calcium hardness, cyanuric acid, and chlorine levels — then print out a personalized treatment plan just for your pool. It takes about 5 minutes and can save you from weeks of guessing and wasting money on chemicals that don’t solve the real problem.

Step 4: Balance Your Water Chemistry

Once you have your water test results, it’s time to balance your chemistry in the correct order. Always adjust alkalinity first, then pH, then calcium hardness. Only after everything is balanced should you shock the pool. Here are your target ranges to aim for:

  • pH: 7.4 – 7.6
  • Total Alkalinity: 80 – 120 ppm
  • Calcium Hardness: 200 – 400 ppm
  • Free Chlorine: 1 – 3 ppm
  • Cyanuric Acid: 30 – 50 ppm

Step 5: Shock the Pool and Run Your Filter

After your water is balanced, give it a good shock treatment to eliminate any bacteria, algae spores, or organic material that built up over the winter. Run your filter continuously for at least 24–48 hours after shocking, and backwash when needed. Don’t plan on swimming until your chlorine levels drop back to 1–3 ppm.

Don’t Forget a Preventative Algaecide Treatment

One of the best investments you can make at the start of every season is a quality algaecide treatment. Added right after you shock, a preventative algaecide creates a protective shield against algae blooms before they start. It’s far easier — and cheaper — to prevent algae than to treat a full-blown green pool later in the season.
