Labor Day may mark the unofficial end of summer, but here in Middle Georgia, your pool still has plenty of good days left in it. September and October bring warm afternoons, cooler evenings, and, let’s be honest, a whole lot of falling leaves and acorns headed straight for your water. A little fall pool maintenance now saves you a big headache (and a bigger cleanup bill) come spring.
We’ve been helping Warner Robins, Macon, Perry, and Bonaire families care for their pools for more than 30 years, and fall is when we see the same handful of problems pop up again and again. Here’s the checklist we give our own customers.
Skim More, Not Less, as the Leaves Start Falling
It’s tempting to ease off on skimming once swim season slows down, but fall is when your skimmer earns its keep. Leaves, pine straw, and acorns that sit on the bottom of your pool stain surfaces and feed algae as they break down.
- Empty skimmer and pump baskets at least twice a week once leaves start dropping
- Use a leaf net (not just a flat skimmer) if you have oaks or pecans overhead
- Consider a leaf cover for heavy-shed weeks. It’s much easier to lift off one full cover than to net out a week of debris
Keep Your Water Chemistry Balanced Through the Cool-Down
Cooler water is more forgiving than the July heat, but decomposing leaves throw off your pH and eat up your sanitizer. Test your water once a week through the fall:
- pH: 7.4–7.6
- Free chlorine: 1–3 ppm
- Alkalinity: 80–120 ppm
Organic debris tends to drag pH down and cloud your water. If your levels are drifting and you’re not sure why, bring a water sample by the showroom. Our team will test it for free and send you home with a plan, not a pile of chemicals you don’t need.
Run Your Pump a Little Less, But Not Too Little
As water temperatures drop into the 70s and below, you can shorten your pump’s daily run time. Most Middle Georgia pools do fine on 6–8 hours a day in fall instead of the 10–12 they need in the peak of summer. Just don’t cut it so short that water sits still. Circulation is your best defense against algae, even in October.
Check Your Equipment Before Winter Sneaks Up
Fall is the smart time to have any nagging equipment issues looked at: a pump that’s louder than it used to be, a filter that needs backwashing more often, a heater you’ll be counting on for those shoulder-season swims. Getting repairs done in September or October means you’re not waiting in the spring rush when everyone in Warner Robins wants their pool fixed the same week.

Don’t Forget the Deck and Surroundings
While you’re out there, give the area around your pool some attention too. Trim back branches that hang over the water, clear leaves off the deck before they stain, and check that your fence gates and latches still close properly. Safety matters year-round, not just in June.
