So you have decided to add a pool to your backyard. Congratulations! Now comes the question every new pool family asks us: what actually happens next? Understanding the pool build timeline takes the mystery out of the process, and after building pools across Middle Georgia since 1988, we can walk you through it step by step.
Every yard is a little different, so think of this as the typical journey rather than an exact schedule. If you want a timeline for your specific project, call us at 478-953-7300 and we will talk through your yard, your design, and your season.
Step 1: Design and Planning
Before a single shovel hits the dirt, we work with you on the fun part: shape, size, depth, features, and where the pool sits in your yard. This is when decisions about decking, lighting, and equipment get made, and it is worth taking your time here. Good planning up front is what keeps the rest of the build smooth.
Not sure which construction style fits your family? Our guide to fiberglass vs. gunite vs. vinyl liner pools is a great place to start.
Step 2: Permits and Prep
Permits and utility checks happen behind the scenes. Your builder handles the paperwork with your county or city, marks utility lines, and plans access for equipment. Homeowners rarely need to do much here besides be patient, and it is a step you never want rushed.
Step 3: Dig Day
This is the day it gets real. Excavation usually moves faster than people expect, and by the end of it you can stand in the hole that will become your pool. Fair warning: your yard will look like a construction site for a while. That is normal, and it gets better every week from here.
Step 4: Steel, Plumbing, and Shell
Next comes the structure: steel reinforcement, plumbing lines, and the shell itself. Weather plays a role in this phase, and here in Middle Georgia our mild fall and winter stretches are actually great building windows. It is one reason we wrote about why fall is the best time to start your pool build.
Step 5: Decking, Equipment, and Finishing Touches
With the shell in place, the space starts looking like a backyard again. Decking goes down, equipment gets set and connected, and finishes like tile and coping bring the design to life. Lighting and automation are installed now too, so evening swims are ready from day one.
Step 6: Fill, Startup, and Pool School
The moment everyone waits for: water. After the fill, our team dials in the chemistry, starts up the equipment, and walks you through how everything works so you feel confident as a new pool owner. Then it is time for the only step that matters: the first cannonball.

How Long Does a Pool Build Take?
This is the question behind the question, and the honest answer is: it depends. Design complexity, permitting, weather, and the features you choose all shape the calendar, which is why we do not quote one-size-fits-all timelines. What we can tell you is that most families are surprised by how much of the wait is planning and permitting rather than construction itself, and that starting in fall or winter usually means less competition for build slots and a pool that is ready before Memorial Day, not after it.
A few things that keep any build on track:
- Decisions made early. Changing the design mid-build is the most common source of delay.
- A realistic weather buffer. Middle Georgia is kind to builders most of the year, but every project should leave room for rain.
- One team, start to finish. When your builder handles the process end to end, nothing falls between the cracks.
