Saltwater vs. Chlorine Pools: Which Is Right for Your Middle Georgia Backyard?

One of the first questions we hear from families planning a pool is some version of this: “Should we go saltwater or stick with chlorine?” It usually comes with a few things they’ve heard from a neighbor or read online, and about half of those things are true. So let’s clear it up. After 30+ years of building and servicing pools across Warner Robins, Macon, Perry, and the rest of Middle Georgia, we’ve maintained plenty of both, and the honest answer is that the right choice depends on your family, not on a trend.

Here’s what you actually need to know when weighing a saltwater vs chlorine pool for your backyard.

First, the Big Myth: Saltwater Pools Still Use Chlorine

This surprises a lot of folks. A saltwater pool is not a chlorine-free pool. Instead of adding chlorine by hand, a salt chlorine generator converts dissolved salt into chlorine right in your plumbing, continuously and in small amounts. Your water is sanitized the same way. The difference is how the chlorine gets there, and how steady the level stays.

And no, your pool won’t taste like the ocean. Ocean water runs around 35,000 parts per million of salt. A saltwater pool sits closer to 3,000 ppm, which is about one tenth as salty. Most people describe it as barely noticeable, somewhere near the saltiness of a teardrop.

What Families Love About Saltwater

There are real reasons saltwater systems have become so popular with the families we build for:

  • Softer feel on skin and eyes. Because chlorine is generated steadily instead of dumped in doses, you avoid the spikes that cause red eyes, faded swimsuits, and that strong “pool smell.” That smell actually comes from chloramines, which build up when chlorine levels swing.
  • Less hands-on dosing. The generator handles day-to-day sanitizing, so you’re not hauling buckets of tablets or shocking the pool as often.
  • Steadier water through our long season. Middle Georgia pools work hard from April into October. A system that holds a consistent chlorine level has a real advantage during those 95 degree stretches in July.

What to Keep in Mind With Saltwater

Nothing is maintenance-free, and we’d rather you hear this from us than find out later:

  • The salt cell needs care. The generator’s cell should be inspected and cleaned a few times a year, and it’s a wear item that eventually needs replacing.
  • Salt is tough on certain materials. Softer natural stone, some metals, and unsealed surfaces around the pool can wear faster. This is something we plan around during design, so bring it up early.
  • You still test your water. Salt systems manage chlorine, not everything else. pH tends to drift upward in saltwater pools, so regular testing still matters. If water balance feels like a mystery, our post on Pool Chemistry 101 breaks it down in plain English.

The Case for a Traditional Chlorine Pool

Traditional chlorine pools have kept Middle Georgia families swimming for generations, and they remain a great choice:

  • Lower upfront equipment cost. No generator to purchase or install.
  • Simple and proven. Tablets, liquid, or granular chlorine are easy to find, and every pool professional in Georgia knows these systems inside and out.
  • Precise control. Some owners like being able to respond immediately after a big pool party or a summer storm. If algae has ever gotten ahead of you, you know how handy that is. We wrote about that battle in How to Get Rid of Pool Algae Fast in Georgia’s Summer Heat.

The tradeoff is simply more regular involvement: keeping chlorine on hand, dosing consistently, and shocking when the water demands it.

So Which One Is Right for You?

Here’s the short version we share in the showroom. If you want the most hands-off week-to-week experience and gentler-feeling water, and you’re comfortable with the equipment investment, saltwater is hard to beat. If you prefer lower upfront costs and a simple, familiar routine, traditional chlorine still does the job beautifully.

Both sanitize well. Both can produce sparkling, healthy water all season. And both pair with any pool construction type, whether you’re leaning fiberglass, gunite, or vinyl liner. If you’re still weighing that decision too, start with our guide to fiberglass vs. gunite vs. vinyl liner pools.
